Discussion:
Why do we use Second Life for art education? What is the future of Second Life in art education? Why we teach students how to use Second Life?
Sandrine Han: I think we all know the answer, but if we can have a record of this, will be great for people to use as a reference.
Marylou Goldrosen: My students are exploring SL in search of unusual artworks for digital storytelling –one usage
Sandrine Han: I am teaching students SL as another 3D software easier for them to start with
Marylou Goldrosen: Students love to make/build things –you have the land to do it., whereas, I just have a small place
Zultress Maven: I think both of these are really excellent ways to use SL. I’ve been really looking at it for the possibilities including: design, urban planning, sociological experimentation, public art, and currently I am engage in developing a course for 21st Century Global Citizenship and I think SL would be very useful with this
Marylou Goldrosen: My grad class just discussed global possibilities of SL. They searched for sites –such as global nonprofits-like Global KIds and are reviewing some of them
Marylou Goldrosen: SL is great for future research results in multiple interpretations of experience along with its issues that point to cyberworlds,
Zultress Maven: That sounds wonderful do they exchange reviews or create blogs or is this work conducted in SL somehow?
Sandrine Han: What if there is another OpenSime just for all art educators in the world, cheaper, but fewer users?
Marylou Goldrosen: That would be good -but we are learning more now from a spread of different educators and artists
Sandrine Han: Yes! that is what I was thinking… even if there is a cheaper place, because of the population in SL, people don’t really want to move! 🙂 we can see more, observe more in SL!
Marylou Goldrosen: One of my grad students is interviewing art educators of SL –research
Marylou Goldrosen: Another future possibility is virtual ability– helping disabled –they become empowered on SL. We just wrote an article with ALice Wexler from SUNY New Paltz on this
Marylou Goldrosen: Let’s not forget cross-cultural teaching and research
Zultress Maven: I think this is very important and a huge asset or argument to utilize SL
Marylou Goldrosen: Students are learning dif languages and ways of thinking–living of SL
Marylou Goldrosen: June Julian at University of the Arts in Phil with her grad student Julian Crooks exhibited school children’s work in their place and interviewed their teacher on SL in a machinima
Marylou Goldrosen: Machinima making is another great future
Zultress Maven: I was fortunate enough to be invited to Lilly’s class in SL and many of the environments that the class had built were game-like — do you utilize gaming strategies in your course-work in SL?
Marylou Goldrosen: Teaching as a Quest for Treasures is a gaming strategy — lots of treasure hunts on SL
Sandrine Han: game-like strategies involve more script language in the environment… when I teach my students how to use those scripts, they are pretty excited about it
Marylou Goldrosen: ALso role-playing strategies
Zultress Maven: yes role-playing also — I was first of all amazed that I could observe/participate in a class at NIU or possibly anwhere in the world as a guest educator and then the spirit of fun involved in exploring the world
